In the spring of 2003 the RAF No. 4 Squadron was deployed as part of a 30 Harrier pool to take part in “Operation Telic”, the British name for “Iraqi Freedom”. They were stationed at Ahmed al Jaber Air base and were tasked with close air support and reconnaissance duties. Another role the Harriers of No. 4 Squadron were given was the destruction of Iraqi mobile Scud launchers.
The BAe Harrier is the first operational V/STOL (Vertical/Short Takeoff and Landing) aircraft. By directing the engines exhaust through two movable nozzles the force can be used to propel the aircraft along a runway or lift it vertically and then into forward motion. Because of this ability to lift off vertically the Harrier began to be referred to as a "jump jet".
