The F6F was a US Navy carrier-based fighter aircraft developed to replace the F4F Wildcat. The F6F Hellcat and F4U Corsair were the primary US Navy fighters during the second half of WWII. First flown on June 26, 1942, the F6F Hellcat entered service in 1943. It proved to be the most successful aircraft in naval history, destroying 5,271 aircraft while in service.
