In April 1943 Shoichi Sugita was selected to escort the Betty bombers carrying Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto and his staff. Sugita, flying a Mitsubishi A6M Zero, and the bombers, were attacked by American P-38 Thunderbolts and the bombers were destroyed
