Richard Newbery was the commanding officer of 610 Squadron and he recorded a personal tally of 9 V-1 rockets while flying Spitfire XIV, DWD/RB159. By September of 1944 his squadron had claimed a total of 50 V-1 rocket kills.
The first recorded V-1 attack on England hit Swanscombe in Kent on June 13, 1944. More than 2400 V-1s reached England and they were soon referred to as the ‘Doodlebug’ or 'Buzz Bomb'. V-1 was an abbreviation for its German name of ‘Vergeltungswaffe 1’ or ‘Revenge weapon No.1’ although its official title was Fieseler Fi 103A-1.
The Supermarine Spitfire is a British single-seat fighter aircraft used by the Royal Air Force and many other Allied countries through the Second World War and on into the 1950s as a frontline fighter and in secondary roles. It was produced in greater numbers than any other Allied design.
The Corgi Aviation Archive features a wide selection of high quality, ready-made, diecast model airplanes. Each model is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, using specifications of the original aircraft. Corgi models are built with diecast metal and some plastic components.
The models in the Corgi Aviation Archive series feature: realistic panel lines, a detailed cockpit with pilot figure, historically accurate aircraft markings and landing gear with rubber tires. They can be displayed with the landing gear down or 'in flight' on the included stand.
