In May 1940, the 815 Naval Air Squadron provided support to the Dunkirk evacuation. In August the squadron sailed for the Mediterranean aboard the HMS Illustrious, attacking and minelaying Rhodes, Benghazi and Tobruk. In January 1941 the HMS Illustrious was severely damaged in a dive bombing attack. Five of the 815 squadron aircraft escaped to Malta and combined with the remnants of the 819 and 821 squadrons to re-form as a new 815 squadron under the same CO
The Fairey Swordfish was a torpedo bomber built by the Fairey Aviation Company and used by the Fleet Air Arm of the British Royal Navy during WWII. Designed in the 1930s, the Swordfish remained in service to the end of the war in 1945. Approximately 2,400 of the aircraft were built
