Soon after the end of World War II, the USAAF (as it was until 1947) vacated the UK en masse and it was not until August, 1951 that tactical elements of the USAF returned to the U.K. in the form of the 81st FIW. On the 27th of August F-86 Sabres of the 116th FIS took up residence at Shepherds Grove in Suffolk, England, being the first aircraft of this type to be based in Europe.
The F-86 Sabre was a transonic jet fighter aircraft. First flown in 1947, the F-86 entered service with the U.S. Air Force in 1949. The Sabre is best known for its role in the Korean War where it was pitted against the Soviet built MiG-15 and obtained UN air superiority.
The Corgi Aviation Archive features a wide selection of high quality, ready-made, diecast model airplanes. Each model is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, using specifications of the original aircraft. Corgi models are built with diecast metal and some plastic components.
The models in the Corgi Aviation Archive series feature: realistic panel lines, a detailed cockpit with pilot figure, historically accurate aircraft markings and landing gear with rubber tires. They can be displayed with the landing gear down or 'in flight' on the included stand.
