The CH-47D Chinook first flew in 1982. It included upgraded engines, fiberglass rotor blades, a redesigned cockpit, redundant and improved electrical systems, advanced flight control system and improved avionics. The RAF returned their original HC1's to Boeing for remanufacture to the CH-47D standard; the first of which returned to the UK in 1993 and were designated HC.2. RAF No. 27 Sqn., based at Odiham, Hampshire, U.K., is currently deployed to Afghanistan.
The Chinook was first flown in September 1961, with the delivery of the first CH-47A to the U.S. Army in August, 1962. The chinook was used extensively during the Vietnam War, where they became ‘flying trucks’, moving every type of cargo, including ordinance and heavy construction equipment. Roles included the transport of troops, medical evacuation, search and rescue and parachute drops. The Chinook remains in service today with the U.S. Army as well as with the military forces of other countries, including the Royal Air Force. The RAF operates the largest fleet of Chinook support helicopters after the U.S. Army.
This highly detailed diecast model Chinook helicopter from Corgi features contra-rotating rotors, a fully working rear door ramp, detailed cockpit with pilot figure and accurate markings.
