In March of 1943, VMF-213 arrived in the Solomon Islands equipped with F4F Wildcats, but re-equipped with F4U Corsairs before entering combat. With 13 aerial victories, Captain James N. Cupp was one of the highest scoring aces of this squadron. Cupp claimed his first two kills (a ‘Betty’ and a ‘Zero) in this aircraft on July 15, 1943 during his second tour. The aircraft wears a white 7 in place of the previous number 13 just forward of the national insignia. The aircraft also bears four kill marks representing Cupp’s victories claimed on July 17th in F4U-1, BuNo 02580. Cupp was shot down on September 18th and, after bailing out of his aircraft, was picked up by Americans. He spent 18 months in a hospital and underwent 14 operations.
The F4U Corsair was a carrier-capable fighter aircraft that saw service primarily in World War II and the Korean War. It paired a lightweight fuselage with a powerful engine and large propeller. The Corsair served in smaller air forces until the 1960s, following the longest production run of any piston-engined fighter in US history (1942–1952). Some Japanese pilots regarded the F4U Corsair as the most formidable American fighter aircraft of World War II.
The Corgi Aviation Archive features a wide selection of high quality, ready-made, diecast model airplanes. Each model is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, using specifications of the original aircraft. Corgi models are built with diecast metal and some plastic components.
The models in the Corgi Aviation Archive series feature: realistic panel lines, a detailed cockpit with pilot figure, historically accurate aircraft markings and landing gear with rubber tires. They can be displayed with the landing gear down or 'in flight' on the included stand.
